Major Ruddington Junction Work Begins

Long-awaited highway improvements to alleviate the daily traffic queues at an increasingly busy village crossroads are starting this weekend – and will take around five months to complete.

As previously reported, local frustrations have been mounting about peak-time tailbacks at the Kirk Lane/Loughborough Road/Flawforth Lane traffic lights in Ruddington. It’s as hundreds of families continue to move into four major new housing developments here (approved over three years’ ago as part of the Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC) ‘Local Plan Part Two’) before the mandated improvement works to add extra turning lanes at this critical junction have been carried out.

These considerably overdue works are beginning during the second, third and fourth weekends in July, with preparatory work by National Grid*. This will continue with another week of work in September***. Alongside this electricity work, the further package of agreed improvements will continue when different parties undertake their respective works.

It comes after the signing of the ‘Section 278’ legal agreement recently, followed by a meeting last month at which VIA East Midlands was presented with the fine details of all necessary works and a timetable to undertake them.

Long-suffering motorists and local residents are being reassured these works have been co-ordinated to minimise disruption to road users – and that everything should be completed by the end of November 2023. However, during this period, significant delays are inevitable due to the large volume of traffic which now passes through this junction on a daily basis.

The Loughborough Road/Kirk Lane/Flawforth Lane junction will get extra, dedicated right-turning lanes and new pedestrian crossings at the traffic lights

Additionally, St John’s Road – a popular Ruddington shortcut – will be closed to traffic from July 24th to 28th for further National Grid work, meaning motorists will need to travel via the village centre to get into the estate or out onto Loughborough Road.**
